A Thermocouple is an instrument that produces a temperature-dependent voltage as a result of the thermoelectric effect. The result can be interpreted as a temperature measurement. The device has two dissimilar electrical conductors forming electrical junctions at differing temperatures. Thermocouples are widely used as temperature sensors and can measure a wide range of temperatures. They can power themselves and don’t require external form of excitation. The only downside of Thermocouples is their precision (errors of less than 1°C can be difficult to achieve). These instruments are commonly used in science, industry and for domestic use (thermostats, flame sensors).

 

Any test or measuring equipment should be re-calibrated over time. Due to external factors like pressure, humidity and temperature, Thermocouples can lose its accuracy and precision over time.
